She.ology's Guide to Gifts: Wives & Girlfriends Edition

We know we’re a web site for women, that’s why this post is written to men. We know we’re hard to shop for. We get it. And we’re here to help!

I polled 4,327 (approximate) of my friends to find exactly what gifts they’d love to find under the tree this year from their sweetheart - votes are in, here’s our guided list.

Oh, wait! First, I want to say two things about buying for your beloved:

  1. We love gifts with meaning.

  2. We love gifts that show you know us.

A really expensive gift with no meaning (at least in my book) will not beat out the inexpensive gift that is connected to a memory, shared joke or experience.

And a bonus point:

3. it’s SO LOVELY to see a gift under the tree with our name on it IN ADVANCE of Christmas morning. It’s nice to know you were thinking and planning ahead of time. Pro tip: Just pretend Christmas is December 22nd. We believe in you!

Far and away the most-requested gift in our poll was:

A MASSAGE GIFT CARD

SO many ladies mentioned this one and I think there are a couple of benefits to it: a) For being a gift card, it’s still a pretty intimate gift. b) It comes at several price points (expect to pay between $50-125 for an hour massage at a nice place.) c) It always fits and never has to be returned.

How to buy it:

  1. Find a good, reputable massage place or spa (ask around, check online - spas and athletic clubs are usually a good choice.)

  2. Go to their web site and order a gift card OR if you’re pressed for time, go to their business and pick it up.

  3. Wrap it in a box with something fun like nice lotion or a book or some earrings. The gifts in the box don’t need to be expensive it’s just nice to have a physical gift at Christmas time.

Second most-requested on the list:

A HOUSECLEANER

No kidding, the ladies have spoken and they would LOVE to have some help with the housework in the new year. How to do it:

  1. Check Angie’s list or ask your friends or co-workers for recommendations on a housecleaning service or someone they have used personally and know is good (this part is important!)

  2. Call the person/business and arrange to pay ahead for a deep clean or a months worth of weekly cleaning or TWO months or however many months you would like to be the hero to your woman.

  3. Wrap up a note (unless the company has gift cards) with her favorite magazine and a Starbucks card that says, “Spend some time with a good book while someone else cleans the house.” She will LOVE YOU. I mean, she already does. But she’ll DOUBLE love you!

More Ideas:

4 Things Personalized Tote Bag Buy your favorite gal a tote emblazoned with her four favorite things. I dare you. And yeah, if you want to put your name on her favorites list, I won’t stop you. (Oops! Just saw that we’re too late for Christmas arrival - but we left it on the list because it’s such a great idea for future you.)

Noonday Cubed Gold or Silver Studs Ugh. I adore these and they are made my migrant workers in Lima, Peru - helping to prevent exploitation. Easy to ship, easy to wrap, under $50. Win, win, win!

Anthropologie Aprons Okay, this is a tricky one. I personally love cooking and always wear an apron, so this would be a dreamy gift for me. Other women might not love the June Cleaver stereotyping, but might love the Anthropologie label. You know her. You do you.

The Giving Keys This one blends all the elements of perfect gift-giving. Jewelry + a word that means something to her + a cause that gives back = You’re getting kissed beneath the mistletoe!

Silk Pajamas from Huckberry This is a great way to get her something sexy that she won’t be embarrassed to open in front of the kids or the in-laws.

The NIV Journaling Bible. I think a new Bible is a great way to start the new year and is such a thoughtful gift. This one has lined space on every page for journaling. Throw in a nice pen and this is a beautiful and not-very-expensive gift. Note - I’ve linked you to the Amazon option which is “leather-like” for about $20. Here’s the link to one at CBD that is genuine leather for $38 (and CBD will engrave her name on it for you for about $5, I think - but you have to order soon if you want the fancy stuff!)

A Fun Planner to Ring in the New Year from Mochithings. I recently ran into this company and I have to guard myself against visiting their web site too often because I get lost there FOREVVVVVER. Jounrals, notebooks, pens and - gasp! - sticky notes. Study nerd heaven.
